How do you even start looking for a contractor you can actually trust? (8 อ่าน)

Okay, so I'm completely new to this whole home renovation thing and I feel like I'm drowning in information but none of it is actually helpful. I've got friends telling me to just pick the cheapest quote, other friends saying never go with the cheapest, and then I read online that I should check licenses and insurance and read reviews and ask for references and it's all just so much. I've lived in my house for about six years now and I've been putting off these updates because I'm honestly terrified of getting scammed or ending up with shoddy work that I'll have to pay to fix later. The kitchen counters are stained beyond repair, the bathroom tiles are cracking, and I just can't keep ignoring it anymore. I need to find someone who's going to show up on time, do quality work, and not disappear halfway through the project with my money. I've started making a list of questions to ask when I call places, but I don't even know if I'm asking the right things. I keep hearing horror stories from people who hired the wrong company and I really don't want to be one of those cautionary tales. I've been looking into finding a reliable home renovation company Palo Alto that has a solid track record, but how do you actually separate the good ones from the ones that just have a nice website and fancy marketing? Is there some secret trick to vetting contractors that I'm missing? I'd really appreciate any advice from folks who've been through this because I'm feeling pretty lost right now.
